What is a DGroup?

A D-Group (Discipleship Group) is four men or women committed to growing together for a period of time with the goal of multiplying as each member sets out and replicates the group by inviting others to take the same discipleship journey with them.

MEN'S DISCIPLESHIP

As iron sharpens iron,  so one person sharpens another.  Proverbs 27:17

Men intentionally equipping and discipling other men with the Word of God.  Encouraging accountable relationships that guide men to lives of gospel transformation.

Ask Another Question ?

How many people are in a DGroup ?

  • DGroups  consist of a leader and 3 others (gender based). We do not suggest less than 3, and would say no more than 4. (Ideally 4 – Jesus’ model Matthew 17:1)
  • We believe a group of 4 creates a broader range of accountability and support. Everyone is free to encourage each other in the group to grow in areas of spiritual growth.
  • Jesus did not so much invest in a one on one discipleship model. Rather he spent the majority of his time investing in groups.  Each of them having a diversity of backgrounds and abilities. Paul said to Timothy entrust these things to faithful “men” (plural) who will then teach “others” (plural) also.
  • Likewise a group of 4 provides a diversity of experience which helps facilitate a broader accountability and support structure.

How often and where do DGroups meet ?

  • We suggest a weekly meeting of 60-90 minutes for the purpose of intentional study of the scriptures,  prayer, and building relationships through discipleship.
  • The day, time, and place are to be determined by the availability of the D-Group Members.  Some will meet at the church, we believe it can be a  witnessing opportunity to meet at a coffee shop, in a home, or even in the workplace.

How long does a DGroup meet ?

  • While we  encourage moving at a pace that works for the participants, we ultimately do want groups to multiply.
  • Without a doubt one crucial element of healthy discipleship is ongoing reproducibility. Discipleship means multiplication and so we ask that you begin your current DGroup with the end in mind.
  • Multiplication is at the heart of being a disciple and is in fact the calling and task of all Great Commission Christians. “Go therefore and make disciples…”.
  • Most groups will complete the curriculum in 9 - 12 months.

What is the DGroup Curriculum?

  • DGroups follow a 22 session curriculum track.
  • The track begins with sessions on bible study, prayer, quiet time, scripture memory, and other spiritual disciplines.
  • Next is a study of the first four chapters of John's gospel.
  • Finally there are 5 sessions focused on building assurances in the life of the disciple.

How do I get started with a new DGroup ?

  • Pray for holy spirit direction in selecting disciples. Jesus, our example in selecting disciples, spent time in prayer before selecting men (Luke6:12-16).
  • The word disciple means learner. Begin by asking God to send you a group of men or women who have expressed a desire to learn and grow.
  • You can read over and learn what a DGroup at New Vision looks like by reading session one of the DGroup manual Understanding Discipleship
  • Ready for your first meeting here is a suggested outline Getting started with your first meeting

What makes a good DGroup relationship ?

  1. The centrality of (God’s Word) truth is emphasized as people begin open their lives to one another around the truth of God’s Word and the Lord begins to rebuild their lives from the inside out.
  2. Relational vulnerability means being open, honest, self-disclosing and having confessional relationships which then give the Holy Spirit permission to remake us.
  3. Mutual accountability is authority that you give to others to hold you accountable to mutually agreeable standards. This is not legalism or phariseeism but “iron sharpening iron."

How To Go and Make Disciples

Some of the specific roles a discipler will carry out are as follows:

1. The first and key role of the discipler is to issue an “invitation to accountable relationship.” The commitment is described and the covenant is signed. The discipler becomes the “keeper of the covenant.” The discipling process should not commence until the invited disciple has prayed over and signed the covenant of commitment. Without the covenant there are no mutually agreed-upon standards for accountability.

During the process you were asked you to prayerfully consider who will be your discipleship partners for the next leg of journey in order to continue the discipleship chain.

2. Initially, the discipler is the group convener and guide. The lessons are laid out in such a way that the discipler simply walks the partners through the discussion format. Approximately one-quarter to one-third of the way through the discipling process, the members rotate the task of guiding the weekly format, as a way to equip and prepare for leadership of the next generation.

3. The discipler prepares for the weekly assignments just as the disciples do. Even though the discipling appointment will be guided by questions asked by the discipler, the guide shares his or her own responses to the discovery questions in the natural flow of conversation.

4. The discipler models transparency by sharing personal struggles, prayer concerns and confession of sin. The discipler does not need to have all the answers to biblical and theological questions. Feel free to say, “I don’t know, but I’ll try to find the answer or let’s research this together.” The power of modeling is not dependent upon a false perfectionism. The discipler will gain as much insight into Scripture and the Christian life as those who are being discipled for the first time.[1]
